Improved Espresso Martini

Ingredient

  • 1 oz Espresso coffee
  • 1 oz Exprè Caffè Italiano
  • 1 oz Mr Black coffee liqueur
  • 1 oz Opihr Oriental

Glass:

Serve in a Coupe glass

How to make:

SHAKE all ingredients with ice and fine strain into chilled glass.

Review:

Keep it simple - equal measures, shaken *vigorously* for 12 seconds. Use the best, freshest coffee you can for your espresso, and keep it hot for as long as possible. If the other ingredients are room temperature, add the ice to the shaker last; if everything is chilled add the espresso last. Either way, get the lid on and get shaking *immediately*, to ensure you get a good crema when you pour.

History:

I created this improved espresso martini when it occurred that the cardamom and chilli notes in Opihr gin might complement coffee really rather well. Turns out, they do. Simultaneously we'd found Mr Black, which has much less sugar than other coffee liqueurs, and therefore tastes rather more of coffee.

If you're diabetic or just don't have a massively sweet tooth, this reduction in sugar content is a good thing, but this isn't a "low sugar alternative" coffee liqueur, it's simply a better coffee liqueur.

The end result is a much drier drink than most espresso martinis, but still with the luscious crema and coffee hit.
